Indian actress Esha Gupta came under fire recently for posting a screenshot on her Instagram story of a conversation she had with another individual via WhatsApp. In it the person Gupta is conversing with called Alex Iwobi, forward for Premier League club Arsenal, “gorilla faced” and said, “It’s like evolution stopped for him.” The actress, who is a well-known Arsenal fan, replied with laughter, as well as criticism toward the soccer team for how they choose to utilize Iwobi following a fourth-round loss to Manchester United in a game for the FA Cup. Following this Instagram post, many accused Gupta of racism, seeing that Iwobi is Nigerian (i.e. Black).
Gupta chose to delete this screenshot shortly after posting it, but could not escape harsh criticisms from onlookers. Being aware of this, she tweeted, “Guys m sorry you thought it was racist. Was bad on my part, being a sports lover. Wallah never meant it. Sorry guys forgive the stupidity 🙏🏽 #gooner4life.” This message seemingly explained that her post about Iwobi was shared out of resentment following Arsenal’s loss. Gupta furthermore asserted:
