The heart wants what it wants.
Lewis Capaldi’s “Someone You Loved,” which peaked at №1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, briefly touches on the feelings of a heartbroken individual coping with the loss of a romantic or intimate partner. Throughout this song Capaldi expresses a need for comfort, with lyrics such as:
I need somebody to heal,
Somebody to know,
Somebody to have,
Somebody to hold. (Sammak et al., 2018)
He furthermore highlights a longing to regain the affection of his significant other, singing:
And I tend to close my eyes when it hurts sometimes,
I fall into your arms,
I’ll be safe in your sound ’til I come back around. (Sammak et al., 2018)
In addition to its Billboard success, “Someone You Loved” has received other accolades including a №1 spot on The Official UK Top 40 chart, an NRJ Music Awards nomination for International Song Of The Year, and a Grammy nomination, which if won would reportedly make Capaldi the first Scottish artist to win a Grammy award since Calvin Harris in 2013.
